Are epoxy floors suitable for underfloor heating?

Are epoxy floors suitable for underfloor heating?

Epoxy floors are often encountered in business premises that require a solid and durable surface. With underfloor heating you can make a room more sustainable, but are epoxy floors suitable for underfloor heating?

The answer is short: yes. Epoxy floors are, just like PU floors and trowel floors, feasible with underfloor heating. Pleasant, because this combination guarantees more comfort and is energy and space saving.

Better heat regulation with underfloor heating

In industrial spaces it is important to keep the heat where it is most needed, namely as close to the floor as possible. In high rooms such as factories, company and production halls, floor heating has a more efficient heat output than traditional convection heating systems.

Underfloor heating produces more radiant heat than radiators, while the latter mainly generate convection heat. Where convection heat rises in the form of warm air, radiant heat mainly heats locally. Exactly where you want it.

Underfloor heating and self-levelling floors have plenty of benefits

Due to its efficient heat dissipation, underfloor heating offers many advantages in industrial areas:

  • The heat is evenly distributed and remains constant. That gives a continuous comfortable feeling. A comfortable workplace keeps employees happy and is advantageous for productivity.
  • There is considerable savings on energy costs. Precise estimates differ, because the energy saving differs per underfloor heating system, but companies can save on average 10-20 percent on their energy costs compared to traditional radiators. Besides, self-levelling floors have a relatively low RC value. In other words, these floors have a high heat transmission.
  • The floor and wall space is optimally used. With underfloor heating, radiators that take up a lot of space are superfluous. This makes valuable wall and floor space ‘free’ that you can use for other purposes.
  • The result looks very neat. Self levelling floors have a neat, seamless finish that seems to blend into the room space. This pleasant feeling is maintained when there are no radiators in the field of vision.

Epoxy floor and underfloor heating a good combination?

Nevertheless, the story goes that self-levelling floors, including epoxy floors, are sensistive to cracks. And therefore unsuitable for underfloor heating. A misconception, if you ask us. A self-levelling floor will never crack by itself. Self levelling floors adhere to the substrate, often sand cement or concrete. A crack always starts in the substrate. As the crack size increases and the self-levelling floor can no longer bridge it, ripples will become visible in the casting floor itself. It is therefore important to always repair existing cracks and other defects in the substrate if this is the case.

Follow a good heating protocol

To prevent the floor from cracking, a good heating protocol is of crucial importance.

For example, it is advisable to switch on underfloor heating in combination with an epoxy floor only after complete curing (about 7 days). A heating protocol prevents shrinkage and expansion stresses because the floor heating is gradually and slowly brought up to temperature.

A few things to watch out for:

  • Switch off the underfloor heating at least 4 days before applying the self-levelling floor, in order not to have a too fast reaction. Also leave the floor heating off during the application of the self-levelling floor;
  • Always place the self-levelling floor on a dry substrate;
  • After curing, increase the temperature in steps of 5°C per day to room temperature. Never exceed a temperature of 28°C of the floor surface.

With the above tips, you can use underfloor heating with any type of self-levelling floor, whether it is epoxy, polyurethane, ESD or modified epoxy.
