Wearing course on concrete – Everything you need to know

Wearing course on concrete – Everything you need to know

Applying a wearing course on a concrete floor? We have put together a number of points for attention. These apply in particular to bridge and road surfaces. At the bottom of the article there are other options regarding floor finishes for concrete.

Key points of attention

The main points of attention for applying a wear layer to concrete are:

  1. Pretreat the substrate by grit blasting, milling, acidification or a combination of these techniques
  2. Apply HIM Primer wet in wet; otherwise scatter lightly with fire-dried sand
  3. Moisture level of concrete floor may not exceed 3.5%
  4. Use a wet coating thickness gauge for even layer thickness

Coloured wearing course

Wearing courses are available in different colours. Most colours used are: black, gray and red. Ask for the possibilities for other colours. In principle everything is possible.

Which aggregate to choose?

Which aggregate is suitable for the wearing course on a concrete substrate? In terms of scattering, material can be chosen according to one’s own discretion, as long as it is wear-resistant; our advice:

  • Fast traffic:
    1. Class 1 to 3 (normal to medium traffic): Guyana Bauxite / Mandurax 1-3 mm
    2. Class 4 and 5 (heavy traffic): Guyana Bauxite / Mandurax 3-5 mm
  • Cycle paths: Mandurax 1-3 mm, Guyana Bauxite 1-3 mm or Indiana Red 1-3 mm (0.25-1 mm is sometimes also sufficient)
  • Pedestrian traffic: Mandurax 0.25-1 mm (also 1-3 mm is often used)

Save 1 work cycle with our 2-layer system (primer + wear layer)

HIM has developed a unique wearing course that enables contractors to save a lot of money: Himgrip NT. Himgrip NT consists of only two layers: primer and wear layer. As a result, 1 labor cycle less is required to install the wearing course.

This, of course, saves a lot of time and money (approximately 30% savings per project).

Other options to finish your floor

Looking for a wear layer for concrete, but not for a bridge or road surface? Then various floor finishes are suitable. In many cases, a more rigid floor coating is then applied, but of course a complete epoxy or polyurethane floor system is also possible. Do not hesitate to ask us for the best solution for your situation.
