In business environments that require a sturdy and durable surface, a cast floor is often the best option. In the search for a comfortable and cost-effective heating method, these same companies often turn to underfloor heating. Do cast floors and underfloor heating make a good match? The answer is a resounding yes. Read on to discover why.
The benefits of cast floors with underfloor heating
Combining a cast floor with underfloor heating offers several benefits, including:
- Improved heat distribution. Especially in large, high open spaces, it’s challenging to distribute heat where it’s needed most—close to the ground where employees are located. With convective heating systems, warm air rises, requiring intensive heating to maintain a comfortable temperature throughout the space. Underfloor heating, on the other hand, generates radiant heat, allowing for precise heating in specific areas. This results in significant energy savings.
- Comfortable working and/or living. Cast floors have thermal resistance values comparable to commercial flooring solutions like project vinyl. They conduct heat well, have high thermal permeability, and contribute to even and consistent heat distribution. This provides continuous comfort for employees and customers.
- Optimal use of space. With underfloor heating, floor and wall space can be maximized. Since radiators are no longer needed (and therefore not obstructing the view!), valuable workspace is freed up for other purposes.
Things to consider
Contrary to common belief, cast floors can indeed be combined with underfloor heating. However, it is crucial to take appropriate precautions to preserve the floor. Here are two key considerations for optimal results:
- Repair existing unevenness or cracks in the subfloor. Cast floors adhere to the substrate (often a sand cement or concrete base). If there are any irregularities that the cast floor cannot bridge over time, ripples may appear in the cast floor. Properly leveling the subfloor can prevent this. Note: the cast floor will never crack on its own.
- Follow a proper heating protocol. The underfloor heating should not be used for several days before, during, and after application to prevent rapid curing. Once in use, it is important to gradually raise the floor temperature to prevent shrinkage and expansion stresses. When this heating protocol is followed, underfloor heating is perfectly suitable for any type of cast floor (epoxy, polyurethane, ESD, and modified epoxy).
