Epoxy wearing course: sustainable applications for concrete, steel, wood and composites

Epoxy wearing course: sustainable applications for concrete, steel, wood and composites

Prevent your concrete, steel, wooden or composite surfaces from becoming slippery as a result of aquaplaning, freezing or green deposits. An epoxy wearing course extends the lifespan of bridge and parking decks, ramps, walkways and cycle paths and jetties considerably. Wearing courses with their waterproof, wear-resistant and non-slip properties create a safe surface for traffic and pedestrians.

Wearing course systems based on Himgrip NT comply with the strict Kiwa assessment guideline BRL K19143 and are the perfect solution for the preservation of substrates of concrete, steel and wood. You can read more about the different applications here.

Sustainable applications of epoxy wearing courses

Epoxy wearing courses are mainly applied to (movable) constructions where anti-slip and wear resistance play an important role. These properties are obtained by scattering Himgrip NT with wear-resistant aggregates such as Mandurax or Guyana bauxite. In some cases a sealer on top is added to the system. For example, after applying lines or road markings on ramps in parking garages.

The wearing course system of HIM, based on a self-leveling epoxy base layer, has numerous applications on concrete, wood, steel and composites, due to the low weight and high bending and tensile strength.

Epoxy wearing course for concrete

With Himgrip NT, HIM has developed an epoxy wearing course that contractors can use to save a full work cycle. Follow the following steps when applying a wearing course to concrete:

  • Pre-treat the substrate by grit blasting, acidifying, milling or a combination of these;
  • Apply HIM Primer;
  • Apply Himgrip NT on the wet primer. If that is not possible, lightly sprinkle the primer layer with fire-dried sand;
  • Keep in mind that the moisture content of the concrete floor does not exceed 3.5%;
  • Use a wet film thickness gauge to be able to apply a uniform film thickness.

Epoxy wearing course for wood

Himgrip NT can be applied directly to pre-treated wood and sprinkled with a scattering agent in the desired grain size. Use the following points of attention when applying an epoxy wearing course to wood:

  • Damp wood? Then apply 1 layer of HIM Primer 36 before applying Himgrip NT;
  • For better adhesion, it helps to sprinkle the primer layer lightly with sand.

Epoxy wearing course for steel

To prevent corrosion and wear on steel substrates, Himgrip NT is preceded by one of the following adhesive primers:

  • 1 layer of HIM (water-based) Primer NT for a BRL-certified wearing course;
  • 1 layer of HIM (solvent-containing) Primer EP203 if no BRL-certificate is required.

For the desired anti-slip effect, the still wet Himgrip NT is then scattered with Mandurax or Guyana bauxite in the desired grain size.

Epoxy wearing course for composites

With Himgrip NT, a wear-resistant, non-slip coating can also be obtained on composite by applying the product directly to the sanded and degreased composite. The wet layer of Himgrip NT must be scattered with Mandurax or Guyana bauxite in the desired grain size. Normally no  primer is required for applying epoxy wearing courses on composite substrates.

To make sure that the epoxy wearing course adheres well to the composite surface perform an adhesion test. A proven method is the ‘pull off test’ according to the ISO 4624 standard.
