Do you want to coat your existing concrete floor? With a thin layer of resin coating from HIM you optimally protect the concrete surface, so that you can enjoy it again for years. In this article we inform you what you should pay attention to before and during application.
To ensure sufficient bonding capacity we advise removing existing coating layers in advance. If this is not an option, an adhesion test on a small surface gives a definite answer.
Coatings are generally not much thicker than a few tens of microns. Due to the minimal coat thickness, irregularities in the substrate will therefore remain visible when these have not been remedied. If there are small bulges on the floor, a coating will wear out earlier in these places.
A floor coating only adheres optimally when the concrete is thoroughly dry, dust and grease-free before application.
Our water-based coatings for concrete benefit from a good drying process. The relative humidity within the room must not exceed 80% and the room itself must be well ventilated.
It may not come as a surprise; you get the best result when the coating is applied without streaks. Cross-rolling helps to give a regular structure and aspect to the floor. Furthermore, it is important to merge with previously applied parts when the coating is still wet, otherwise roller marks will remain visible.
Uncoated concrete is porous and absorbent. In that case, apply an extra layer of coating. This first layer can optionally be diluted with a maximum of 10% water. Optionally, a primer can also be applied first. The primer penetrates the substrate and ensures that the substrate is closed. Within the HIM range suitable concrete floor primers are available, if required with extra fast-drying capacities.
Respect the drying time of HIM primers and coatings before using or over-coating the floor. At 20°C, the top coating is dust-free after approximately 3 hours. After 16-24 hours the floor may be over-coated and foot traffic is possible. The coatings are fully cured after 7 days.
The coatings from HIM are not only suitable for application on concrete, but also for example on cement and anhydrite. Detailed information can be obtained from HIM.
