Easily meet HACCP requirements with HIM floors

Every company that produces, processes or distributes food must comply with the European Hygiene Regulation. It states that they must draw up a food safety procedure based on the basic principles of HACCP, a system aimed at identifying risks and hazard management. The HIM synthetic flooring meets the HACCP requirements.

Significance of HACCP for companies

All companies active in the production, processing or distribution of food have been obliged since 1995 to draw up a food safety plan according to the core points of HACCP (Hazard Analysis Critical Points). These companies must ensure a proper hazard analysis.They must also monitor strict quality standards in the area of food safety, in order to prevent or reduce public health hazards.

Prevent better than cure

HACCP is een preventief systeem dat is gebaseerd op de volgende zeven kernprincipes:

  1. Identifying all potential hazards;
  2. Preparing CCPs, critical control points;
  3. Identifying all critical limits per CCP;
  4. Continuous monitoring of the CCPs;
  5. Recording corrective actions in the event of a threat;
  6. Periodically checking the HACCP procedure;
  7. Maintain documentation and records

The European regulations leave enough room with HACCP for company’s own interpretation. It is not a manual with fixed regulations.

Companies are expected to focus this system on their own situation.

HACCP certificate

It is however possible to obtain a HACCP certificate if companies can demonstrate that they meet the requirements.

In the Netherlands, the NVWA (Dutch Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority) or the IGB (Health Protection Inspectorate) assesses whether this is the case. In Belgium, the General Food Inspection and the Ministry of Public Health are the designated parties for this.

Recognize the dangers using HACCP

HACCP distinguishes three types of hazards that may occur during the preparation, handling, packaging and transport of foodstuffs:

  1. Microbiological hazards: fungi, mycotoxins, harmful viruses and pathogenic bacteria;
  2. Chemical hazards: residues of, for example, plant care products, coolants and lubricants;
  3. Physical hazards: remains of stone, glass, sand, paper, metal or rope.

HIM synthetic floors meet HACCP requirements

There is no such thing as an HACCP floor, but the floor finishing can contribute to a large extent that food processing companies will be able to meet the HACCP requirements.

HIM has developed various project floors that meet the HACCP conditions and are therefore suitable for companies active in the food industry:

  • Bakery floors: The HIM epoxy floors are ideal for bakeries and other food processing companies where hygiene and ease of use are central. The seamlessly executable floors are resistant to moisture, grease and steam cleaning and do not pose a risk to food production. HIM trowel floors are heat-resistant and suitable for areas with long-term exposure to high temperatures.
  • Kitchen floors: Polyurethane pouring or modified epoxy can withstand impact, are liquid-tight and easy to clean. Ideal floors for restaurants, caterers and hospitality institutions, where hygiene is paramount.
  • Fishery floors: HIM’s fishing floors deliver good results, both onshore and offshore. Safety and hygiene are two important requirements for fishing boats and the fish processing industry. Floors usually suffer heavily in this sector. Child’s play for these impact and scratch-resistant epoxy floors.

This makes it very easy to comply with article 14 of the Dutch Commodities Act. In addition to the HACCP, this article states that floor areas in commercial premises:

  • Must be in good condition;
  • Easy to disinfect;
  • Must be made of impermeable, washable, non-absorbent and non-toxic material.
